The world needs a wellbeing economy

Do you ever wonder what your purpose is? Do you ever ask yourself, “what’s the point in all this?” or “why am I here?”

You’re not alone. We all ask ourselves these questions. At least, we do when we get to that point in life where we think more about the value of what we bring, our impact on others and wonder more about the future of the human race and our wonderful home - planet Earth.

It’s a pretty huge realisation, that moment when you pause and reflect on the significance, yet insignificance of what you’re doing right now, whatever that thing is! Yes, it’s great to buy that new item of clothing, trade in your old car for a new one, buy a bigger house, book that holiday of a lifetime… these are all ways to bring more pleasure into our lives. But they aren’t the whole picture. There are much bigger factors at play here and it’s a joyous moment when we recognise it.

There’s a whole world out there and so much diversity in what people have at their fingertips. What if we could move towards a better living experience for everyone, as well as benefitting our environment, our wildlife, our natural world, so that it can live a long and happy life alongside us? You might be reading this thinking, “sure, sounds great, but I’m simply one human being and what difference can I possibly make?” The answer to that is, quite a lot, actually.

I’ve been following the work of the Wellbeing Economy Alliance for some time and today I became a fully fledged member - whoop! 🙌🏼

What does that mean? Global organisations and individuals working together to transform our economy into one that prioritises safety and happiness, nature, fairness, connection and community - for everyone, everywhere 🌍

What’s not to love?!

Since I founded Positive Wellbeing, I’ve been seeking new ways to bring together wellbeing of people and wellbeing of the planet. They’re equally important and we need do all we can to look after both.

It always begins with us. Right there, wherever you are, it begins with you! You have the power to make choices today and those choices will likely have an impact on other people, your surroundings and community, workplace, family, friends, as well as having an impact on yourself. Research shows us that acts of kindness, altruism and behaviours that benefit the greater good have a tremendous effect on our mental health. They boost us. Being good literally makes us happy.

Are you now wondering how you can be good? You already know that. You just need to put it into practice a little more. Yes, join an international movement towards a global culture shift if you feel so compelled. Get involved in charities, donate, set up events, become a campaigner and raise money… if you can, if you have the ability and the time. If not, the small things also make a huge difference and if everyone engaged in small acts of support, we’d all notice it, the world over. Offer a helping hand, ask if someone needs something, check in on people, be kinder to wildlife, plant trees, grow herbs and vegetables, share within your communities, look after your neighbours, stick to the trails in the countryside, allow flora and fauna to flourish, turn off the lights, and the tap, car share, upcycle, recycle, re-use, be aware, get educated, be the educator…

Not only can you start to implement small habits into your own day to day, but you can be an ambassador and shining star for others too. You are an influencer. People are inspired by others doing good things. Fly the flag. Find a way that aligns with your workplace ethos, the company values, something that people will genuinely feel motivated to go for and make a positive difference. Every small change counts. Every little helps. Every person matters.

If you’re interested in working with me to find ways to help your people at the same time as helping our beautiful world, please get in touch, I’d be delighted to explore ways that you can be a part of the wellbeing movement. Let’s do what we can to make the world a better place, and be happier for it. What a perfect legacy to leave. What a way to find purpose in your life.
