5 years of Free Happiness
Free Happiness: The Art and Science of Positivity - Five Years On
From living rooms to boardrooms.
Five years. Dozens of countries. Multiple continents. Thousands of readers.
All sparked by one idea that continues to change lives:
Free Happiness: the art and science of positivity 📒
What I’ve learned since then is simple, but powerful:
Happiness isn’t something we find once and keep.
It’s something we practice daily, imperfectly, inconsistently and often in the smallest, most ordinary moments.
That’s where the real transformation begins.
The Power of What We Repeat
One of my favourite ideas from the book still holds true today:
👉 “Your brain believes what you repeatedly show it.” 🧠
Think about that for a moment.
If we constantly focus on what’s wrong, what’s missing, or what’s uncertain, our brain adapts to that lens. But if we gently train it day by day, to notice what’s working, what’s good, and what’s possible…
We begin to reshape our entire experience of life.
Not overnight. Not perfectly. But meaningfully.
Small Shifts, Big Changes
Over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of hearing your stories.
Stories of resilience. Of quiet breakthroughs. Of subtle mindset shifts that led to profound life changes.
That’s the real magic of positive psychology.
Not grand gestures. Not forced positivity.
Just small, consistent changes in how we think, notice, and respond.
Because when we change the way we see the world, we change the way we live in it.
Two More Truths About Happiness
Along the way, a couple of other insights have become increasingly clear:
1. Happiness grows when it’s shared
Moments of joy become more meaningful when we connect with others, whether that’s a conversation, a kind gesture, or simply feeling understood. Happiness isn’t just internal; it’s deeply relational.
2. You don’t have to feel good to do good
We often wait to feel motivated, confident, or happy before taking positive action. But the opposite is often true - action creates momentum. A small step forward, even on a difficult day, can shift your state more than waiting ever will.
A Different Kind of Practice
So perhaps happiness isn’t about chasing a constant state of feeling good.
Maybe it’s about:
Noticing more
Comparing less
Giving more
Expecting less perfection
And returning, again and again, to what matters most.
A Thank You
Thank you for being part of this journey so far.
Whether you’ve read the book, shared a story, or simply paused to reflect on your own happiness, you’ve contributed to something meaningful.
And this is just the beginning.
There’s more to come 💛
